Water Treatment Plant |

The City of Anacortes is committed to providing quality water for
all residents and making sure its citizens can rest assured of its safety
and superior quality.
The City of Anacortes owns and operates a regional water treatment plant
located near Mount Vernon, on the east bank of the Skagit River. The
current plant has been in operation since February of 1970 and serves
around 56,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customers.
The Anacortes Water Treatment Plant uses a multi-barrier approach in
turning the raw Skagit River water into tap water. This consists of
gates and screens at the Intake Station, where the water is drawn from
the Skagit, disinfection to inactivate harmful organisms, and treatment
to enhance the formation of large particles that can be readily settled
out in the settling (or sedimentation) basins and filtered by the
plant’s multi-media filters. The filters use nature’s own water
purification method as the settled water passes through layers of
anthracite, sand, garnet, and gravel. The entire treatment process is
continuously and closely monitored. The plant is staffed 24 hours per
day, 365 days per year by certified water treatment plant operators.
Water samples from each phase of the process are tested according to a
strict daily schedule at the plant’s laboratory. Independent
laboratories conduct additional tests.
Over the last four years we have conducted comparison taste tests,
pitting our tap water against brand name bottled waters. We are happy to
say that Anacortes tap water has continually been selected as the best
tasting water. Taste tests have been performed at the Waterfront
Festival and the Annual Public Works Open House. Look for the City of
Anacortes booth at the 2005 Waterfront Festival and compare for
yourself!
The City of Anacortes Water Treatment Plant extends a cordial
invitation to all the citizens of Anacortes and surrounding area who are
interested in the treatment and purification of the City's water supply
to visit the Water Treatment Plant. Tours of the plant, which is located
on the Skagit River at 14489 Riverbend Road in Mount Vernon, are
available by appointment. Please call the Plant at 360-428-1598 to
schedule an appointment. |
